Theatre Review: Cathy and the Trolley Dollies at Gate 69

Laughing is so good for the soul. I think it’s something that really needs to be tapped into more often… for health reasons!

Yes, we giggle at the funny things our kids say or the videos our friends share on Facebook, but how often do you really allow yourself a good belly laugh??

Last Thursday I headed out for a night on the town and a whole lot of laughs with a girl friend.

Our destination? Gate69, Cape Town’s cabaret theatre

The occasion? A date with Cathy and the Trolley Dollies

A naughty night out with a trio of gorgeous “girls” was exactly what I needed… I left the house in a bit of a stressed-out state (something to do with the fact that I now have to re-live Std 3 (now Grade 5) and all the stress that goes along with exams!) but within a few moments of our warm welcome at the door of Gate69, I’s swopped Geography textbooks for all out Glamour…

The bar area of the little theatre was heaving and the atmosphere was electric. The crowd was animated and the venue was beautiful!

A night at Gate69 isn’t just about sitting back to watch the show, it’s about dressing for the occasion (feather boas and false lashes optional!) It’s about enjoying a delicious platter of tapas with friends, a glass (or 3 of wine), a night of naughty entertainment and a whole lot of laughs!

Arriving at our table upstairs we realised that this was going to be an experience when South Africa’s premier drag queen, Cathy Specific, and her two equally gorgeous air hostess sidekicks, Holly and Molly, were on hand to welcome us, show us to our tables and take our drinks orders! Service with a smile indeed!

After an hour of relaxed dining (always nice to have an uninterrupted time to catch up, uninterrupted, with a fellow mom in the trenches), we fastened our seatbelts for takeoff… for a flight to remember with Cathy and the Trolley Dollies.

Cathy, Holly & Molly kept us bent over laughing (not in the brace position!) for the rest of the evening.

The show, written by the First Lady of Flying and directed by and Maralin Vanrenen, features deliciously naughty jokes, fabulous song items and flamboyant dance numbers (choreographed by Sven-Eric Muller)

The laugh a minute “take off” of the airline industry is highly interactive and it’s likely you’ll find one (or all 3) of the 8 foot tall air stewardesses – Brendan van Rhyn (Cathy), Christopher Dudgeon (Holly) and Rudi Jansen (Molly) – joining you on the theatre floor for some extended fun!

The show wows with outrageous hairdos, big show numbers, powerful voices, gorgeous costumes and high heels! If you’re looking for a fun night out with a group of girls or a date night with a difference then head to Gate69…
