Movie Review: Cars 2

Living in a home with a boy under 5 you are sure to have become a fan of “Lightning McQueen”…. It’s hard to escape the bright red branding in every toy shop you enter! We became converts about 4 years ago when my son (then almost 2) become the biggest die-hard “Cars” fan you’ve ever seen. His second birthday followed a “Cars” theme and most of his presents did too. He still treasures his collection of “Cars” character dinky cars – although some are looking a little worse for wear…

When we heard there was a sequel coming out we were all very excited and made a family trip to the movies to watch “Cars 2” on the big screen. What a fun outing – and not just for the 5 year old! Both mom and dad enjoyed the action packed movie filled with familiar faces such as McQueen and Mater as well as a few new characters like the super spy – Finn McMissile and the Italian racing car – Francesco! This time the story leaves Radiator Springs and the friends end up on a world-wide adventure visiting Japan, Great Britain and the beautiful Italian coast! In some parts the animation is so good you wish you were enjoying a holiday on the Italian Riveria!

Here is a brief summary of the movie:

Star racecar Lightning McQueen and the incomparable tow truck Mater take their friendship to exciting new places in “Cars 2” when they head overseas to compete in the first-ever World Grand Prix to determine the world’s fastest car. But the road to the championship is filled with plenty of potholes, detours and hilarious surprises when Mater gets caught up in an intriguing adventure of his own: international espionage. Mater finds himself torn between assisting Lightning McQueen in the high-profile race and towing the line in a top-secret mission orchestrated by master British super spy Finn McMissile and the stunning rookie field spy Holley Shiftwell. Mater’s action-packed journey leads him on an explosive chase through the streets of Japan and Europe, trailed by his friends and watched by the whole world. The fast-paced fun includes a colorful new all-car cast, complete with menacing villains and international racing competitors.

Well you can imagine the delight when I came home with a copy of Cars 2 on DVD. Our original Cars has been played repeatedly so this updated version was very welcome. We enjoyed sitting down to watch it again as a family and the new and varied settings of the story made for some great educational chats – my son esp enjoyed learning about London and discovered that Mom and Dad had lived there. He can’t wait to visit Big Ben now too!

The movie is also great for teaching values such as friendship, loyalty, kindness and honesty and both Cars movies have been always full of positive messages about loving each other for who we are!

If you have a little boy (or an adult one!) and haven’t yet watched Cars 2 then I suggest you take it out the next time you visit the DVD shop, or better yet buy your own copy (watching it once is never enough!) Plan a great family movie night in! Pile on the couch with some popcorn and a blanket. Let them stay up a little bit later than usual and enjoy making some memories together! It won’t be long before your kids won’t be cuddling with you on the couch anymore….

What is your favourite movie to watch as a family? Is it an animated classic or a more recent Pixar release? We are big Disney fans and have a good collection but would love to know your faves. One of my personal faves is “The Jungle Book” but sadly the disc has snapped and I’ve been on the hunt for a new copy for months now to no avail….. Shout if you see one!

Be sure to come back soon for more Family Movie Night recommendations!
