A week ago I was battling a serious case of nerves. I had been invited to take part in a blogger cook off at entrepo – a contemporary homeware chain that has recently opened it’s doors in malls across Cape Town and is heading to Joburg soon! The event was to take place at their V&A Waterfront store and would include a few bloggers in a “cook off” of sorts where we would get to experience their stunning range of equipment first hand.
Now if you know anything about me it is this: I don’t cook much. I can, but I prefer to leave it to the more experienced (read: patient) in our home… I had second thoughts about going at least 10 times but was encourage by the cook in our home (read: husband) as well as the friendly entrepo team when I expressed those doubts on Twitter! I headed off from home not sure what to expect! And once I arrived I was immediately put at ease. Firstly, I realized I wasn’t going to be cooking for a large audience or camera (horrors). I wasn’t going to be cooking alone but as part of a twosome and there was a chef on hand – hooray!!
After chatting to a few of my fellow bloggers – some of whom I have met only online and some in real life – we were paired up. I was partnered with Matt Allison – an urban farmer and foodie – to prepare the main course of Roasted Chicken Stuffed with Lemon and Thyme served with Steamed Spring Vegetables and a White Wine Jus. What sweet relief to know I could happily hand over the hard graft of feeding people food they could actually eat to him and assist with the basics… the parts I was confident I could manage – chopping asparagus, tieing up chickens and seasoning!
The other bloggers who took part were Dan from Bangers & Nash and Natalie Roos from Tails of a Mermaid who prepared the most awesome starter of Seared Tuna Carpaccio Served with Microherb Salad, Sumac and Lemon Dressing with a Cucumber and Avocado Salad. This is Chef Preeti Bardolia’s signature dish and was seriously yum. The sauce was DIVINE!! It might even consider attempting to prepare it for a dinner party sometime…. it was that good. Nash and Nat were totally winning the cook off after we tucked into this course.
Our roast chicken with steamed baby greens was obvs delish but once we tasted the dessert of a Chocolate Fondant with Liquid Chocolate and Jasmine Centre, Caramel Foam and Coffee Ice Cream Sandwich there was NO GOING BACK. Susana and Stephanie B – both DJ’s at 2OceansVibe and Good Hope respectively – rocked this one out the park. It was amazeballs – so decadent that we totally lost track of time and suddenly realized we were eating dessert, in a deserted shop, at almost midnight! Clearly time flies when you’re having fun and I did have lots of that (and wine). Thank you to entrepo for a lovely evening, to Natasha and Lee-Anne for the invite, to Matt for being a superb partner and to all my fellow bloggers for the great conversation and food!
Here are some more pics of the event… (Please excuse some of the blurry bits due to lack of lighting and the lack of photos of my course due to me actually making it…..Also once the food was served there was no way I was spending time taking photos of it – eating it was far more pleasurable!)
