Hair oils are really having a moment in the hair world – they are really the most amazing product to have arrived on our beauty radar in recent years when it comes to hair care.
But hair oils are far from new – in fact they have been a beauty staple for women in the Middle East and North Africa for thousands of years!
Oils have the ability to coat hair and smoothen out the cuticle. Natural oils have the added ability to penetrate the hair shaft and nourish it from within, treating split ends and taming frizzy hair resulting in smooth hair and nourished roots. Vitamin E is also extremely beneficial for hair and is often found in hair oil in high quantities. It promotes healthy hair growth as it contains antioxidants, which help to boost cells and encourage them to produce healthy hair – it has even been used for hair regrowth.
Oil is a key component for healthy hair. When hair is healthy, it looks shiny and bright because light reflects from its smooth surface. Damaged hair has a rough, uneven surface that creates split ends, knots up easily, and appears dull and lifeless. When a nourishing oil is applied to damaged hair, it re-establishes its healthy balance and protects hair from heat, chemicals, and UV damage.
There are so many benefits to using hair oil and quite a few ways to use the product so I’ve listed a few of these below…
The Benefits of Hair Oils
1. To nourish hair – massage a few drops into your hair BEFORE shampooing
2. To protect hair (from environmental damage as well as heat drying/ styling) – work a few drops (3 – 4) into your hair after towel drying
3. To eliminate frizzy hair and tame flyaways – apply a small amount of oil before or after blow-drying
4. To add shine – use after blow drying or straightening as a leave-in conditioning treatment
5. To relive itching caused by dry scalp and dandruff – add a drop or two to your scalp and massage into your head.
6. To deep condition hair – use in between shampooing as an overnight treatment
7. To create a soft, smooth hair style – apply after blow-drying to split, dry ends
8. To create more vibrant colour
9. To promote the growth of healthy, strong hair
10. To undo damage caused by chemical treatments and dyes
I started using my first hair oil about 3 years ago and haven’t looked back since – my hair is definitely in a better condition for it and I love the luxurious feeling of applying a few drops of oil to my hair. Since that first bottle I have discovered a few more options that I’ve been testing out recently and I must say they all have their benefits.
Here are a few of the hair oils I have been trying lately…
Inoar Argan Oil
This particular argan oil is high in vitamin E, omega’s 3 & 6 and anti-oxidants which contribute to healthier, younger-looking hair by restoring flexibility, moisture and shine. These ingredients also help to nourish hair pores and roots and strengthen the protein bonding structures in the hair plus they renew the hair and repair damage caused by heat styling. This is a thick gel-like oil that is easily absorbed into hair. As is often the case the product has a great scent. (R545.00 at hair salons and spas and on www.inoar.co.za)
L’oreal Elvive Extraordinary Oil
This beautifying oil is suitable for all hair types and has a multi-tude of uses. It contains a blend of 6 oils extracted from rare flowers and has a subtle scent. This award winning Extraordinary oil provides incredible nourishment for all hair types. The formula is light weight and won’t weigh your hair down. (R159.00 on www.zando.co.za)
Inoar Extreme Premium Oil
Another amazing oil from Inoar – my new favourite. It’s an exclusive product that has an exotic combination of ingredients including Argan, Macadamia, Rose Imperial and Myrrh oils – the scent transports you to another wonderful world! This oil contains anti-bacterial properties making it great to use for scalp problems (even lice!) The texture of this oil is a light-weight slight gel consistency but it doesn’t leave any greasy residue – it is instantly absorbed and leaves my hair feeling (and smelling) amazing! This is the original argan oil that burst onto the scene about 3 years ago. Moroccanoil Treatment is a versatile, nourishing and residue-free formula that can be used as a conditioning, styling and finishing tool. It blends perfectly with other products and even speeds up drying time. This treatment for hair completely transforms and repairs as its formula transports lost proteins for strength; fatty acids, omega-3 oils and vitamins for shine; and antioxidants for protection. It absorbs instantly to fill gaps in hair created by heat, styling and environmental damage. This product is instantly absorbed into the hair to help create shiny, silky hair. Moroccanoil Light Treatment is also available for those with finer hair. (R450.00 at www.everythinghair.co.za andwww.retailbox.co.za)
Badger Seabuckthorn Antioxidant Hair Oil
The Badger approach to hair care is simple: enhance the beauty, luster and body of hair by using natural, nourishing products that work in harmony with the whole body. Badger is a USDA Certified Organic brand and all their hair oils are 100% natural. These include Argan Hair Oil for dry and damaged hair, Jojoba Hair Oil for dry scalp and Seabuckthorn Vitamin Restorative Hair Oil for all hair types. I tried the latter product which is the perfect one to counteract the effects of daily exposure to sun, wind, earth, water and pollutants. Enriched with vitamins and antioxidant-rich oils plus Seabuckthorn and Pomegranate, this oil is an indulgent treatment for your hair to help restore it’s natural strength and elasticity. Other ingredients include Apricot – a potent emollient, imparting moisture and shine and Rosehip that possesses regenerative properties to help hair to return to its healthiest state. I use this hair oil as an overnight treatment as I found that it was quite thick and made my hair look a bit too greasy to head out the door but I woke up with gorgeously moisturised hair! As you can see I highly recommend the benefits of Hair Oils and suggest you add one of these Hair Heroes into your hair care regime!
