These days it’s hard to fathom that there are still companies around the world that test out their products on animals. In all honesty I find it hard to believe they ever did!?
That being said I am the first to admit that I’m not the world’s no 1 anti-animal cruelty advocate. I most likely use and review products tested on animals (so no need to call me out on this!) I wish I were better, if I’m completely transparent I think the main problem is that I don’t know enough about the world of animal testing. I don’t know if I want to find out more as it all sounds so shocking!
But once we do start doing some research and reading up about this issue it’s kinda hard to ignore… and once we know better, we do better, right!?
So, today I’m trying to do a bit better. And tomorrow I’ll try again, and the day after that too….
Once this new way of living becomes more a part of who I am it will become second nature to only choose to buy products for use in my home and on my body that don’t use other bodies to test their efficacy or safety!
The good news is that there are companies out there who are making it easier for you to make better buying choices.
For instance Beauty without Cruelty is an amazing South African animal rights organization that has a primary objective to educate and inform the public about the exploitation, abuse and suffering of animals and to offer humane, non-animal alternatives. They publish the Humane Guide with a listing of all the South African beauty and home products that do not test on animals.
One South African beauty brand doing better is African Extracts, one of South Africa’s top-selling beauty brands with a range of skin-care products that are inspired by nature. Formulated to international benchmarks and using world-class ingredients the hero ingredient in all African Extracts Rooibos skin-care products is an advanced Bio-Active Rooibos extract from fresh, green rooibos plants harvested in the Cederberg mountains of the Western Cape. Found nowhere else on earth, the extract is organic, rich in powerful antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory, skin-soothing and protective properties.
In line with their promise of “skin care inspired by nature”, their products are not tested on animals, and do not contain parabens or plastic microbeads that are harmful to oceans and rivers.
African Extracts Rooibos are proud to be endorsed by Beauty Without Cruelty. None of the African Extracts Rooibos products are tested on animals and all their products are vegetarian (the majority are suitable for vegans too!)
Because beauty should not come at the cost of suffering Beauty Without Cruelty is supporting a proposed law to ban animal tests for cosmetics and skin care products in South Africa, and to prevent the sale of products or ingredients that have been tested on animals here. Animal testing has been banned in many countries, including the European Union, Norway, India, New Zealand and many others for years… isn’t it time South Africa did the same? By purchasing a Classic product in the next few weeks you’ll be helping African Extracts Rooibos to support Beauty Without Cruelty in fighting for the rights of those who can’t speak up for themselves…

I love that the African Extracts Rooibos Classic range of skincare is suitable for all skin types and that it is not only kind to animals and the environment, but it’s kind to my wallet too!
Here are a few of my favourite African Extracts products from the Classic range…
One of my perennial faves is their Moisturising Hand & Nail Cream (R32,99). This super moisturising hand cream contains all the antioxidant power of Rooibos to protect delicate skin from the damaging effects of the environment. Vitamin E, chamomile and keratin help to nourish and condition cuticles and nails. The non-greasy cream formula is easily absorbed and I love the subtle Rooibos scent.
A new fave is the Deep Cleansing Face Wash (R62,99), a foaming wash enriched with green Rooibos extract and Vitamin B5 to gently clean away make-up and surface impurities. This face wash has become a staple in my shower as it’s a quick and easy way to ensure my skin is cleansed every morning and evening. Suitable for all ages and skin types.
The Refreshing Toner (R62.99) has also been a great addition to my skincare routine… This refreshing, alcohol-free toner contains Witch Hazel extract to gently refresh the skin after cleansing and I love the way it feels on my skin.
I’m giving away a hamper of Classic products from African Extracts Rooibos worth R300 to one lucky Becoming you reader.
