Beauty Review: My Esse essentials

A few months back I was invited to a beauty launch for Esse and, despite having an awareness of the brand, this was to be my first introduction into the science behind their skincare.

Esse Probiotic Skincare (Certified Organic by EcoCert) is certified organic, vegan and cruelty free and the company supports the fair trade movement and is also carbon neutral. Their philosophy includes providing skincare that is ethical and sustainable and they are Phytrotrade Africa accredited which monitors plant diversity.

This incredible organic skincare collection contains advanced pre & probiotics which improve the microbial mix on the skin.

  • Probiotics protect, hydrate, improve barrier function, skin firmness, slow the rate of aging and detoxify.
  • Prebiotics are food sources for beneficial microbes. By giving them food, they proliferate and thrive thereby excluding the pathogenic (harmful) ones.

Esse skincare products are designed to optimise skin health and to slow down the ageing process in the long-term.

The Esse range contains beneficial probiotics to create an environment on the skin that favours the growth of beneficial microbes and an optimum skin microbiome. As World leaders in probiotic skincare, Esse incorporates its BIOME+ technology along with organic ingredients and high end natural actives to deliver remarkable results.

Skin is an ecosystem. Human cells and microbes co-exist with both contributing to optimum skin health.

There are Esse products to target the following skin issues:

Acne
Dryness
Eye Area
Oilness
Pigmentation
Sensitivity
Skin Ageing

As a first experience of Esse I was fortunate to enjoy a professional bespoke facial at The Little Green Box Skincare in Constantia.

My main concerns are always ageing, dryness and dehydration and the professional facial aims to boost collagen production, calm inflammation, and strengthen the barrier function. The treatment includes two brand new products – the live Probiotic Ampoule and the oxygen excluding Exclusion Mask. These two unique products are exclusive for Esse therapists only. (I shared more about them in this post.) and aim to “rewild” the skin by boosting the skin with essential pre- and probiotics.

The reason I’m sharing about the professional Esse treatment again is that was the start of something special when it comes to my skin….

After the treatment my therapist, Peta, recommended the correct combination of Esse products for me to use at home. (The Little Green Box stocks the Esse retail range and Peta loves to recommend products for each specific skincare concern.)

I walked away with glowing skin and an excitement to see what the results would be after committing to a skincare routine with Esse…

Her recommendations for my NEW skin care routine were the following:

Sensitive Cleanser (C1) – This pH-balanced creamy cleanser contains ingredients that are 100% natural (& 70% organic). It has been formulated to minimise irritation to sensitive skin while still removing make-up effectively. I’ve loved this cleanser so much and use it morning and evening. I found it’s texture really comforting to my sensitive skin and I appreciate the pump action bottle that ensures no product is wasted or ruined by oxidation.

Sensitive Toner (T1) – Another product aimed at those with sensitive skin, this toner contains probiotic extracts and prebiotic nutrients to support a state of equilibrium in the skin’s surface microbiome. I have not usually been a person with a “complicated” skincare routine featuring multiple products, but what I discovered with this Esse range is that I adored using each and every product and the whole process felt really pampering and important. Spritzing this toner after cleansing left my skin feeling revived and refreshed. It’s a great product to keep on hand throughout the day too to calm stressed skin experiencing hot flushes or redness. It contains gentle moisturising ingredients to improve skin hydration and remains a firm favourite in my new skincare routine.

Resurrect Serum (R4) – This hydrating and plumping serum is aimed at those with sensitive skin who want to address the signs of ageing without overstimulating the skin. This has been my go-to serum and I use it evening morning after 2 spritzes of the Toner. It comes with a pre-measured dropper to ensure you apply just the right amount of product.

Hyaluronic Serum (R6) – Another incredibly powerful serum, this one contains 100% natural ingredients and is aimed at those with mature skins. Hyaluronic Acid promotes rapid moisturisation so helps to reduce dehydration. It contains prebiotics help to optimise the skin’s microbiome. I’ve used this serum primarily at night and love applying this pampering treat knowing it’s doing incredible things to my skin while I sleep.

Restorative Moisturiser (M10) – This product forms part of the Esse plus range for all skin types. It is an intensely moisturising formulation targeted at repair and restoration. It contains high levels of Hyaluronic Acid to boost moisturisation and interrupt the cytokine cascade that accelerates ageing. I have LOVED this moisturiser. Initially the natural scent was something to get used to, but over the past few weeks I’ve become really addicted to it. I have used this moisturiser every morning or evening after the three products listed above (I use a different serum in the morning and evening) My dry skin just laps this up but it can just as easily be used once a day as a restorative night cream. It is ideal for those looking to optimise the health of their skin’s microbiome as it contains an extract of Lactobacillus and two key prebiotics.

Over and above the products listed above that formed the basis of a brand new skincare religious regime, I was also recommend a few additional products which I have yet to incorporate into my regime (I find that I need to ease myself into using new products to avoid overwhelm).

These included the Cream Mask, Hand Cream, Sensitive Eye Cream and Defence Moisturiser. I’ll be sure to share my thoughts on these in a future blog post asap. I’m also really keen to try the NEW Esse Treatment Foundation that contains Prebiotic and Probiotic Actives so hoping to get my hands on that soon.

As I mentioned above, committing to a religious skincare regime using purely Esse products for the past two months has been revolutionary for my skin.

When in the past I would use a “pick ‘n mix” of products that came across my desk, now I was sticking to one range specifically suited to my skin needs: anti-ageing and moisturising!

My skin is completely different for it! I have loved my skin these past few months. No breakouts or dryness, just pure, clear, happy skin that feels moisturised and looks healthy and radiant.

The truth is that modern living is taking it out of us, and it shows in our skin. Antibiotics, disinfectants, chemical-based cosmetics and pollutants are stripping our skin of their natural microbes leading to premature aging and reduced skin health. Esse seeks to rewild the skin by creating an environment that allows your natural microbial diversity to return thanks to pre- and probiotic actives in highly advanced organic formulas specifically designed to support your skin microbiome slow and to slow the rate of ageing in your skin by reducing inflammation.

The long-term effects of synthetic chemicals on the skin are not yet known, but it seems unlikely that they would improve long-term ageing outcomes. Esse stays as close to nature as possible and they don’t allow synthetic chemicals, genetic modification or hormone mimics.

Esse is also committed to providing skincare that is ethical and sustainable for the environment and for the people using it because it’s the right thing to do.

I’ve loved knowing that the products I’m using are not only good for my skin, but good for the environment too.

I love everything about the Esse ethos and I feel like I’ve “found” my perfect skin solution, in more ways than one!
