I was very excited to try out Eau Thermale Avène skincare for a few weeks. A famous pharmacy brand from France, Avène has somewhat of a cult status.
The Eau Thermale Avène products I tried out were the XeraCalm Lipid-replenishing cleansing oil and ultra-rich cleansing bar as well as the Eau Thermale Avene Thermal Spring Water.
Here are my thoughts on each of them…
XeraCalm Lipid-replenishing cleansing oil
This is my favourite product from the ones that I used. The oil cleanser is stunning! It takes off all my makeup without stripping away my skin’s natural oils. As I have sensitive skin, I like using cleansers that add a bit of hydration too – and the XeraCalm Lipid-replenishing cleansing oil did just that.
I use this cleanser everyday as part of my skincare routine. I’m lazy so I love that it comes in a pump bottle, which is easy to use when you’re in a rush. According to Avène, this cleanser is formulated for people with dry skin who also suffer from flakiness or itching such as eczema or atopic dermatitis. It’s suitable for infants and children too – so if your kids are struggling with sensitive skin, this is worth a try!
It’s called “lipid replenishing” as the Cer-Omega ingredient nourishes the skin and strengthens the protective hydro-lipidic film (the natural skin barrier). The cleanser is fragrance free and it smells like nothing, which took me a while to get used to; but ultimately Avène is focused on having as few irritants in their products as possible. So, a win-win for sensitive skin!
Avène Thermal Spring Water
Now this is a wonderful product! I first came across this at my boxing gym before lockdown. A friend was using it on her skin in-between sparring sessions and let me try it. The cool, calm spray is an immediate relief. Now while I won’t be using it during boxing (feels like a waste) I have been using it on warm winter days when I’ve had a full face of makeup on and my skin was feeling parched. It calms and hydrates my sensitive skin immediately.
I like the aluminum can and the nozzle that lets out a very fine mist. It’s a perfect travel companion and I’ll be using it when I’m back in the air-conditioned office this summer. Ultimately though, it’s just water. But it is convenient when you’re on the go and can’t splash water on your face!
Avène Xeracalm A.D. Pain
This is my go-to for a weekend away or camping trip. It’s an ultra-rich cleansing bar suitable for the dry skin of babies, children and adults. I felt it was very similar to the oil cleanser and left my skin feeling soft and nourished.
Overall, I can understand why Avène has such a cult following! I’m eager to try out some of their moisturizers and serums in the future.
