Beautiful Blaauwklippen

I recently had the very good fortune of spending 24 hours on the beautiful Blaauwklippen Wine Estate, my very first visit to the farm!

Located in Stellenbosch, just off the R44, Blaauwklippen is a farm of heritage, yet with new contemporary touches that are keeping it very current.

The first stop on my itinerary was a visit to the Tasting Room where I was introduced to the range of wines on offer including the Blaauwklippen Zinfandel – their flagship wine featuring a label that celebrates the history of the estate in an understated, yet luxurious way. Take a closer look to see what I am referring to!

Wine tasting at Blaauwklippen costs R80 per person for 5 wines. They also offer Macaron and Wine Tasting as well as Chocolate and Wine Tasting which each cost R150 per person.

A short while later it was time to enjoy one of the other pairings available to the public…. the Gin and Nougat pairing. This unique offering is available for R135 per person and features 3 different gin flavours created specifically for BlaauwklippenGarden, Farm and Zin Gin – all paired with a nougat created to complement the flavours!  Inspired by the heritage of devoted craftsmanship, these masterfully distilled products reflect the essence of Blaauwklippen’s 337 year history.

After a busy afternoon of wining and “gining” I was grateful to be shown to my room, luxuriously furnished by room was a cool cocoon from the hot Stellenbosch sun and I sank into the soft linen and plush cushions for a quick cat nap before it was time for dinner just a short stroll away!

Hamm & Uys is the new eatery located at Blaauwklippen. Inspired by the surroundings on the 337-year-old farm, this country-style restaurant offers a lovely relaxed ambience. Our visit fell on a balmy summer’s evening where the atmosphere in the outdoor seating area reminded me of an evening spent on a European town square complete with twinkling, live folk music, happy children running about and a magnificent moon rise over the tree tops. And that was before the feast of food! This is beautiful farm-style food served in shareable platters and pots. We enjoyed a mussel pot, platters of pizzas and brightly colour salads. All the dishes looked amazing and tasted even better!

This is a family-friendly spot that was abuzz on a Friday evening and I can expect it would be equally lovely on a lazy Sunday afternoon. They server traditional Sunday roast lunches – perfect for a family occasion – as well as other Cape classics with a modern spin – such as hot cross streamed bao buns with hot pickled fish and cape pickles. Let’s just say I was only too grateful for the very short walk to my bed!

After a blissful sleep in my stylish room, I woke fairly early the following morning and decided to rather get up and enjoy the quiet beauty of morning on a wine farm!

With only the birds and the squirrels for company I wandered around the garden enjoying the early morning light. I found a patch of cork trees – planted for the purpose of harvesting cork –  abundant hydrangeas and a patio to perch on to enjoy the view of the Helderberg mountains while the sun rose steadily.

Later I explored more of Blaauwklippen with a tour of the latest architectural addition to the estate – the glass conservatory which is used as a contemporary event space – very popular with modern brides who want a blank canvas to create their dream wedding.

After a tour through the vineyards and lesson on Zinfandel it was time for breakfast in the Blaauwklippen Manor House (avail for private group bookings and as wedding night accommodation as part of the wedding package)

Sadly my visit to Blaauwklippen didn’t coincide with the renown Blaauwklippen Family Market, but, as I’ve been told it is one of the best ways to spend a Sunday in the Western Cape, I now have a very good reason to return in the near future!

I look forward to bringing my family along for my next visit to Blaauwklippen to enjoy the wide range of mouth-watering foods on offer as well as the Blaauwklippen wines, live entertainment and laid-back lifestyle that a day under the trees offers.

Blaauwklippen’s Family Market is held every Sunday from 10h00 to 15h00.
