Theatre Review: Beautiful Ballets to see in the New Year

I’ve been really enjoying visiting the ballet more frequently of late, it’s always such a lovely night out! To celebrate the start of the new year, Cape Town City Ballet have two amazing ballets coming out in the next few weeks. First up is Night & Day at the Artscape Theatre, a ballet set to the music of Cole Porter, the legendary American songwriter of the 20th Century.
I thoroughly enjoyed this fun, modern ballet that features a variety of dance styles such as classical ballet, tap dancing and jazz. The story of the song writer’s life is told through the clever combination of his most well-known songs such as Let’s Misbehave, I get a Kick out of You, Too Darn Hot and Every Time We Say Goodbye, among many others. The show is full of style and glamour and I can recommend it for a uplifting evening out.

PERFORMANCES: Wed 8th Jan @ 19h30; Sat 11th Jan @ 14h00 and 19h30

TICKETS: R150 and R175

VENUE: Artscape Theatre

The next show coming up from the CTCB is The Firebird and Les Sylphides opening on Sunday, 19 January, 2014 at Maynardville Open-air Theatre (and will run on Sundays only until 16 Feb) and I’m really looking forward to this show as I haven’t been to Maynardville in quite a while and ballet under the stars sounds magical!

Danced to the music of Stravinsky, the exotic firebird belongs in the sylvan setting of Maynardville Park, as she flits through the trees and the evil Kotschei weaves his spell on the forest creatures.

The Firebird
Kostchei, an evil magician who casts a spell on anyone caught in his domain, wanders through the forest, where the Firebird is flitting from tree to tree. Prince Ivan Tsarevich is also in the forest, and he captures the Firebird. She promises to give him a feather with which he can summon her aid if he releases her. When Prince Ivan is waylaid by a horde of demons under Kostchei’s spell, the Firebird rescues him and he is re-united with his love, the Tsarevna. The Firebird blesses the marriage.
Les Sylphides
Cecily Robinson produced Les Sylphides for the Cape Town Ballet Club in 1938, at the Alhambra Theatre and the City Hall. She produced the ballet for the CAPAB Ballet Co for the first time in 1966, and it is this version that has been revived for Maynardville, 2014 – the start of the CTCB’s 80th birthday year.
