Battle of the.. Suncreens for Kids

Summer is on the way and we had our first taste of the African sun yesterday! My son spent the afternoon on the cricket pitch and, although his team walked away on a high, his skin took a beating!

I suppose we can all take it as a reminder to haul out the sunscreen and make sure you apply it daily.

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, when used as directed, sunscreen is proven to:

Decrease your risk of skin cancers and skin pre-cancers. Regular daily use of SPF 15 sunscreen can reduce your risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) by about 40 percent, and lower your melanoma risk by 50 percent.

Help prevent premature skin aging caused by the sun, including wrinkles, sagging and age spots.

Here we round up & review a few of our favourite sunscreens for kids…

Tips for Effective Sun Protection

To protect oneself from the sun effectively we suggest the following measures:

  • Cover up your skin with UV protective clothing where possible.
  • Make sure you have a hat.
  • Apply suncream at intervals throughout the day and reapply after spending time in water.
  • Select your suncream SPF carefully, according to your needs and the length of sun exposure. The SPF number shows how long you can stay in the sun before your skin will begin to burn. So for example if you skin usually reddens after ten minutes then on  factor 30 you could stay in the sun 30 times longer- 300 minutes (5 hours).
  • Avoid being out in the sun during the ‘heat of the day’ between the hours of 10 and 2pm especially.
