An e-bike adventure with Adventure Shop

Another adventure worth enjoying during a visit to Stellenbosch is the e-bike tour from the centre of town via Idas Valley, over Helshoogte and through Banhoek Reserve on to Boschendal Wine Estate.

This was an amazing opportunity to see the same landscape we enjoyed from the sky (on our scenic flip with Alyd Air), up close and personal!

We arrived early at Adventure Shop (located at Ou Landbousaal, 1 Noordwal-Wes Street just a short walk from Evergreen Manor) and signed all the necessary COVID-19 protocols before getting sized up for our own e-bikes.

As a novice bike rider, let alone mountain bike rider, this was a novel experience for me… I’ve only recently managed to ride further than around my block… and then only ever on fairly flat, smooth terrain!

But, I had heard that e-biking was easy and achievable for beginner bikers – and I’m a FOMO queen – so I was not about to sit this opportunity out.

This guided e-bike tour is ideal for those who want to spend an active outdoor day with friends or family in a beautiful part of South Africa. Cycling these trails with our guide, Severiano, was such a memorable day.

I totally surprised myself with how I managed to ride further and faster than I thought possible (thanks e-bike!) but also just HOW much fun mountain biking can be. Yes, this was probably tamer than what most experienced riders would choose, but for a beginner it was challenging.

There were rocky uphills, steep downhills and even some single track to maneuver through (complete with lots of large boulders!) My confidence grew throughout the morning and I found myself willing to take on more challenging sections of the trail – and really enjoying it all! If my budget allowed I would be buying an e-bike immediately – surely a sign of a successful outing!?

What is great about this adventure is that the e-bikes make it possible for the whole family to enjoy these MTB trails together – something that I would never have thought possible previously! I’m certainly keen to head back with my husband (a mountain biker), teen son and tween daughter soon to enjoy this fun activity as a family. (Children must be minimum length of 140 cm)

The route is approximately 25 km with an elevation of about 600 m. It runs along mostly jeep track and MTB trails. The tour leaves every morning at 9am and it takes about 2.5 – 3 hours depending on how often your group stops!

The cost includes a local experienced mountain biker guide, the e-bike hire and entry fee to the conservancy as well as transport back to Stellenbosch from Boschendal. (Bring own cycling pants, gel seats on request – I wish I had known this sooner!)

The usual cost is R750pp, however they are currently running a special for R450pp so be sure to take advantage and book that offer while it lasts!

As one of Cape Country Routes activity establishments Adventure Shop also offers other day tours, cycle tours and multi day adventure itineraries in the winelands including a multi-day E-Bike tour that makes cycling 50 kms per day to view the Western Cape highlights a breeze!

After our 3 hour ride we were all only too pleased to settle down on the lush green lawns of Boschendal to enjoy our pre-ordered picnics (not included in the e-biking tour fee).
