Amazing Amarula

Anyone who spends any time with me during cocktail hour and beyond will know that I love a good glass of wine, a cider or a refreshing G&T as much as the next mom but if you were to ask me what my drink of choice is, it would most definitely be that South African favourite – Amarula Cream!

I’m a complete sucker for the delicious drink – whether it’s served over ice, as part of a dessert or on it’s own… We enjoyed many glasses on our beach honeymoon which gives it a special place in my memory, but I could quite happily enjoy some every night! So, when I was approached by Amarula with details of a blogger competition where I could stand the chance of winning a year’s supply for myself and a friend I knew I had to pull out all the stops and OWN this competition!!

To celebrate the launch of the NEW 200ml bottle in August, Amarula Cream, one of Africa’s best-loved drinks (at home and abroad) approached a variety of bloggers to put some thought into how they would gift this new size bottle to someone – not just as a birthday or Christmas gift (although those are always well-received), but as a new, original gift idea.

After giving it some thought I realized that I had the perfect opportunity to gift someone I love with a bottle of Amarula to lift their “spirits”….. Every one of my new mom friends and family members! As most pregnant moms know – alcohol is a no-go during the 9 months spent growing a new human, and many moms who are trying to conceive have to forego this treat a few months prior to getting a positive pregnancy test which means that most new moms have been going for almost a year without a drink!! What better time in their lives to bless them with a bottle of Amarula! It would certainly make the ideal gift to congratulate the new mom on a job well done, spoil her with something just for herself while helping her ease into the demands of new motherhood at the same time!

I’m totally in favour of a more unique gift than the usual stuffed teddy or cute baby outfit on your first visit to see the new baby especially as moms often get overlooked at this time…. A bottle of Amarula in either size (200 or 750ml) would be something that only mom can indulge in and therefore very welcome! Or you can take it one step further, as I decided to do, and put together a hamper of food items that have been off-limits for 9 months: A New Mom Gift Hamper with a Difference! I had a few ideas of my own but to make things a bit more interactive I decided to ask a few of my readers what “banned substance” they had missed most during their pregnancy. Here are some of their thoughts….

As you can see some of their most missed items were alcohol, sushi, soft cheese, dark chocolate, biltong and coffee which is why I included all of these items into my gift hamper along with the all important bottle of Amarula Cream!

amarula

To summarize this is what would go into my New Mom Gift Hamper with a Difference

1 x bottle of Amarula Cream
1 x soft cheese (Brie)
1 x packet of crackers
1 x packet of biltong
1 x packet of coffee
1 x slab of dark chocolate
1 x platter of sushi

Now that is a hamper I would have LOVED to receive in those first few days – in fact many moms have some of these items waiting for them next to the hospital bed, so desperate are they to have their “fix”…. and best they do it quickly too as it’s not too long before the dreaded “breastfeeding diet” appears to ruin the food fun all over again…. well, for a little while at least!

What do you think of my entry? Reckon I should win? Do you wanna win a year’s supply of Amarula too? Please leave a comment below and tell me your favourite Amarula moment. And IF I win I will be sure to share the spoils and gift one of my loyal readers with a year’s supply too (provided they are over 18 of course!)

She writes about travel, health, beauty, fashion, decor and family... but not food (unless it's food she's eaten made by someone else) as she is a hopeless cook. She only wakes up early for 2 things... a red-eye flight to somewhere exotic and early morning game drives. She has just finished an extensive home renovation and would prefer to never see another box again. She's never met a chocolate or glass of bubbles that she didn't like!

  1. We took a bottle of Amarula on honeymoon with us. It didn’t last long and we spent an afternoon searching for a bottle store to get another one. Saw some stunning places along the way!

  2. I took a gap year in the UK… winter was rather miserable and lonely and one week I was feeling particularly down. After work on day my boss asked me to come into the staff room. Playing on the radio was Toto’s Africa and on the table were two glasses of Amarula! She said she knew I missed home so I must tell her some Africa stories! I don’t even know where she found the Amarula but it really went down well 🙂

  3. Your entry sounds divine!

a state of being – of being still, relaxed and immersed in the beauty and sensuality of unspoilt Africa…Thus my favourite Amarula moment just happens to be at home surrounded by my family and friends while sitting around the fire drinking our care’s away with a glass of our favourite liqueur (which just happens to be Amarula) in it’s refined and creamy form. Oh please please please pick me <3 Fingers crossed 🙂 xxx

  7. As many youngsters do, I went over to the UK on my ancestral visa in my 20’s.

A favourite place to visit and take my British and Irish friends was always The Springbok Bar in Covent Garden. They would be introduced to the shot “Springbokkie” which naturally was indulged upon! Good memories and a fun way to show our patriotic side!

  8. My Amarula moment was the night my gran died, it was her most favourite drink, the only alcoholic beverage she would sip on, in honour to her, the one who cleaned my wounds when growing up, was there for me since birth, loved me unconditionally, I dedicated an entire bottle of Amarula and finished it to the last drop….

  9. Haha when I was pregz my craving was Amarula…. Needless to say once I was done Breastfeeding I had a litre bottle all to my self 🙂

  10. My favourite memory of Amarula is when my friend and I were still in high school and walked all the way to our hometown’s local hangout place to order…wait for it…Dom Pedro’s with Amarula!

    We felt so grown-up!

  11. Fabulous giveaway Wow! I became addicted to Amarula when we went for an early morning game drive at Samara in the Karoo and the guide/ranger poured a miniature Amarula bottle in each of our coffee mugs at 6am! We then went on a walk with rhinos……and survived to tell the tale 🙂

  12. I am a Mom of 2. Every Amarula moment is an amazing moment. I’ve been drinking Amarula for the last 20 years. Amarula and ice. That’s it. Nothing like it.
