When I first received the invite to spend a night at The Alphen Boutique Hotel in Constantia I wondered if there was any point considering that we live a mere 10 minutes away…
But I quickly recovered and gathered my thoughts and replied that “Yes, of course” we would LOVE to!
And I’m so glad I did! How very silly of the initial me… I don’t know what I was thinking!?
A night away from the kids with my beloved enjoying a bottle of bubbles, chocolate truffles, time to chat, fabulous food and a cheeky late night movie enjoyed from the comfort of a plush king-sized bed…. What’s not to love?
We arrived at The Alphen shortly after 2 and checked into our huge suite where we set about making the most of our carefree afternoon, indulging in the aforementioned bubbles and chocolate in our private lounge while catching up!
The decor at The Alphen is opulent but not extravagant – think beautiful soft carpets, classic colours and splashes of gold – luxury at every turn.
As someone who tends to head straight to the bathroom on arriving in a hotel room the 2 en-suite bathrooms for our suite did not disappoint! Black and white decor with gold accents, complimentary Charlotte Rhys toiletries and the fluffiest white towels you’ve ever snuggled into made these beautiful little bathrooms some of the best I’ve seen.
After an indeterminable amount of time (no watching the clock here!), we meandered through the gardens and grounds to The Rose Bar for a sundowner strawberry daiquiri and we were spoilt with one of the most spectacular sunsets as the sky turned a pretty shade of rose to compliment the setting…
The beauty of staying at a hotel with a bar and a restaurant on-site is that you don’t ever have to get in your car…
So after our drink at The Rose Bar we headed back to our room to change for dinner… and then proceeded to walk down to Blanko, a beautiful restaurant specialising in Italian food and located in the historical manor house.
A dramatically-lit modern white bar greets you on entering the heritage building via the beautiful garden terrace… while inside you’ll discover that the space is made up of 5 different rooms all with their own unique style and atmosphere.
Our evening at Blanko proceeded to be a pleasant surprise of uncomplicated, comforting flavours. We started with Wild Rocket Gnocchi, parmesan & bread crumbs and a selection of Italian meat charcuterie. For mains we tried the Grilled tuna with new baby potatoes & Italian Salsa Verde while I opted for the Risotto from the specials menu which was a definite highlight! Our evening was enjoyed next to a warm fire with a glass of wine paired by the sommelier making this the perfect escape from the cold!
Sunday morning started slowly, the best Sundays always do…
Tea in bed swathed in white linen and the most gorgeous fluffy gown was a definite highlight of our time at the Alphen and it took quite a while for me to find the will to drag myself out of my cosy nest for breakfast!
A crisp Autumn morning awaited us with brilliant blue skies, red-leafed vines and the musty smell of damp leaves that always reminds me of the tree-lined streets of Constantia, and more specifically, the neighbouring Alphen Green Belt.
La Belle Bistro at The Alphen is one of my favourite coffee shops for catching up with friends or celebrating a special person’s birthday. I love it’s warm atmosphere and decadent baked goods on display. The roaring fire also helps, especially on cold, wet mornings when you want a warm escape! The fact that this is the breakfast spot for all overnight guests at The Alphen Boutique Hotel is a total treat!
Delicious baked pastries arrived before we’d even placed our coffee order and these were followed by a pretty fruit platter… and then we still ordered our hot breakfast! It’s a miracle we managed to walk to our car afterwards!
Although our escape from reality at The Alphen Boutique Hotel was less than 24 hours due to our parenting obligations, it felt so much longer and we left feeling revived and ready to face the onslaught of another week… Reminded that even a short, local getaway is ALWAYS worth it. As my mom always likes to say: “A change is as good as a holiday”, and this was a wonderful change I’ll definitely do again!
