A sunset cruise on the Zambezi River in Zimbabwe

After a full day of exploring Victoria Falls it was time to tick another experience off my Bucket List…. (I say “my” because a conversation I had with my husband during this particular outing made me realise that not everyone has a Bucket List! Weirdo!)

Anyway, THIS was on my list forever…

A Sunset Cruise on the Zambezi River

We were greeted on the banks of the river by African singing and dancing and boarded our ferry to be told that drinks were on them! Yes please! Cue endless G&T’s.

The ferry consisted of an upper and lower level and we positioned ourselves on the upper level to begin with as this offered a better panoramic view for photos…. later we moved downstairs and got a water level view of the sunset which was a little bit more private and, thus, romantic!

To be honest the whole experience was out of this world. It didn’t matter where I sat!

The wild waters of the Victoria Falls a few km’s downstream were nowhere to be seen… here it was just a tranquil blue river with lush green borders and a couple of bulrushes and palm trees for tropical effect. Oh yes, an a hippo or 10!

Yes, within a few minutes we’d happened upon a hippo… and then a few more poked their ears through the surface of the water and greeted us with a grunt. A true African moment.

Our leisurely cruise was everything I had imagined. A beautiful rainbow above the mist of the falls. A lone elephant bull breaking branches on one of the mid-river islands. Another pod of hippos chilling in the later afternoon sun. A gin & tonic in hand. There was even a crocodile thrown in for good measure.

And all the while the sun sank lower in the sky, changing the light of the landscape to make it even more beautiful than before.

And then, the sunset! The sunset of my dreams. A golden orb setting behind African savanna and casting it’s reflection on the ripples of the Zambezi waters. It really doesn’t get more magical than this…

We sat together in silence soaking in the special moment. Relishing the beauty of capturing a memory that would last a lifetime…

She writes about travel, health, beauty, fashion, decor and family... but not food (unless it's food she's eaten made by someone else) as she is a hopeless cook. She only wakes up early for 2 things... a red-eye flight to somewhere exotic and early morning game drives. She has just finished an extensive home renovation and would prefer to never see another box again. She's never met a chocolate or glass of bubbles that she didn't like!

  1. This was honestly one of my Vic Falls highlights – it’s just so magical being out on the water as the sun sets, the gentle breezes on your face as the boat drifts across the water, the yumminess of bubbles or G&T! Such an amazing experience. Glad you got to have it and tick off your bucket list Kath 🙂

    1. Hi Kim… This was heaven on earth. I loved every second and will relive that memory for years to come x
