Water – it’s probably the most essential element we need to sustain daily life – not only for nourishing our bodies and minds but for growing our food and cleaning our bodies, ensuring we avoid disease and ill health. On Tuesday 22 March the world will mark World Water Day…
The problem is that water is a scare commodity across the planet. Our recent water restrictions in South Africa have shown us in a very small way the reality of how dire our country’s water supply currently is!
However, we have it good as Westerners living in homes with kitchen taps, baths and flushing toilets are the least affected by the short supply of this valuable and scarce commodity, too often we hardly think about how much of a necessity water is in everyday life. In fact, it’s been estimated that each Western household can use on average 100 litres of water A DAY!
Unfortunately many millions of people around the world are not that lucky. To them 10 liters of water a day is a luxury and clean water is hard to come by.
Global fashion icon, Giorgio Armani, believes that everyone deserves access to clean water. Since 2011, Acqua for Life has provided over 530 million liters of clean water to nearly 80 communities, in seven countries and on three continents.
“With Acqua for Life, I wanted to focus on a key asset: water, the origin of life itself, an indispensable element of daily life. I wanted to create a long-term program that provided a real benefit to those who are the most needy.” – Giorgio Armani
Acqua for Life raise funds, install water points, latrines, rain water collection, water filtering and purification systems, as well as aiming to educate the world on the importance of water conservation. Since 2011, AFL has given 108 communities in eight countries and three continents access to drinking water, with around 880 million litres of water provided.
Here are a few photos taken in Senegal earlier this year showing the impact that Acqua for Life has had on one community….
For the sixth year running, the Acqua for Life campaign, along with Green Cross International, is encouraging people around the world (including me… and you!) to wise up about our water consumption!
So on Tuesday I, along with some of my favourite beauty blogging friends, will be aiming to live for one day on just 10 litres of water.
My entire water supply for the day will be stored in my 10L Acqua for Life jerry can… Yes, this is the only water I will have all day to drink, shower, brush my teeth, wash my clothes, prepare my food and water my garden… and it’s definitely going to be a challenge.
And don’t forget to join me on this journey. I’d be keen to see how you manage to live on just 10l of water for the day…
