I recently discovered some exciting NEW adventure activities on offer in Stellenbosch and one of these was an incredible Cape Winelands scenic flight over Stellenbosch and Franschhoek in a light aircraft operated by Alyd Air Services.
Part of the Cape Country Routes collection, Alyd Air is an air charter service for both business and private small aircraft charter requirements. With an excellent record for safety and punctuality, Alyd Air Services offers air transfers, customised aircraft charters , game lodge fly in/out, photographic and aerial surveys, quick access to remote destinations and scenic flights over the Cape Peninsula and beyond.
Usually operating out of CT International airport, we arranged for our pick up to be at Stellenbosch Flying Club. Our flight was to take place in Juliette, a 4 seater Piper Arrow.
The thought of heading up into the blue beyond on a tiny 4-seater plane that is only accessed via one door on the wing, filled my stomach with nerves, but these were all unfondered once we had lift off!
Stellenbosch from the sky is something to behold!
To enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the spectacular scenery was incredible. We cruised past majestic mountains and above multi-coloured vineyards and pastures. In the far distanced we glimpsed a glittering ocean and even spotted the top of Table Mountain peaking out behind some cloud cover.
Our flight was bump free (except when I took the controls for a few short seconds!) and we cruised comfortably over Helshoogte and on to Franschhoek.
Identifying familiar landmarks and wineries from above was something special and I loved every minute (except the final one – which signaled it was all over!)
Alyd Air offers scenic flights around the Cape and can even arrange a whale-watching trip down to Cape Agulhas, combined with a wine tasting at selected wine estates! A total treat for those looking for a little extra excitement.
