Weekend Wanderings: A Night at The Cape Milner Hotel

After surviving 6 long weeks of school holidays, the priority for our first Friday night after Back-to-School was to get away from the kids – just for one night!

Yes, we LOVE our kids and we all had a super fun family holiday together, but the pressure of being “always on” is intense! Always entertaining, always feeding, always disciplining. Enough!

When the email came through from The Cape Milner Hotel inviting us to spend a romantic evening at their hotel enjoying their Valentine’s Day offering I didn’t have to think twice!!!

CAPE MILNER

As a couple it’s important to us to prioritise each other and our relationship and marriage, so we try to get away at least once a quarter – just the two of us. And it’s always so worthwhile, even just one night away can really be a wonderful “reset” button as we have the time to chat and reconnect without interruptions and daily life creeping in.

The Cape Milner hotel is located in Tamboerskloof (just off Kloof Nek Road) and offers exquisite views of Table Mountain from every room. Chic and elegant, this boutique hotel is located walking distance of Bree and Kloof Street – both offering brilliant shopping, delicious dining and electrifying nightlife!

We arrived after work (& dropping the kids at their grandparents) to a coolly air-conditioned suite offering a sweeping view of Table Mountain and complete with swan towels and red rose petals. Not forgetting the bottle of bubbly on ice!

We carefully pushed aside the petals and relaxed into the King-sized bed with a view… soaking up the silence. Pure bliss!

After enjoying our first glass we headed off to explore a bit more of the hotel. A lot had changed since our first and only stay at The Cape Milner waaaay back in 2002 when we were given a night at the hotel as a wedding gift!

Back then this was a far more corporate hotel, ideal for business travellers. Now the space is revamped and although it’s still an ideal spot for business travellers the hotel now has a boutique feeling to it while still being large enough to host groups.

We wandered up to the pool deck, with views of Table Mountain (the cold wind meant we kept our toes dry), via the bar area and had a sneak peek in at the gym.

Before we knew it, it was time for supper…

What a treat to be able to just head down in the lift to enjoy dinner – not need to drive anywhere or order an Uber. Just a short stroll and you’re there – and afterwards you just roll right on into your bed! This must be one of my favourite things about dining at the hotel restaurant!

Our menu for the night at The Glass Lounge Restaurant was a sneak peek of the “Be My Sweet Valentine” menu that The Cape Milner are offering for the month of February.

We decided to try one of everything on the menu to have a well rounded opinion of the offering, so I ordered the Venison Carpaccio while Brad had the Crispy Oysters. The Oysters were our favorite – although don’t eat the white stuff… it’s pure salt!!

For mains I opted for the African lamb on a bed of Harissa-spiced couscous and served with roasted cauliflower & chickpea salsa which, although I found the barbecue sauce quite overpowering, I really enjoyed the lamb it was tender and tasty.

Brad ordered the Sole “Benoit” with dill croquettes, confit fennel & orange puree. It also came served with mussels. He found the dish a bit overly complicated and recommended that they stick with just the sole as that was delicious as is.

In keeping with the romance of the evening, dessert was to share, and comprised of 3 different mini desserts each – so no squabbling about who gets what – an important aspect to consider for a romantic evening!!

As part of the Valentines meal special, another bottle of bubbly was served with our meal, but we opted to keep it aside for enjoying later, so Brad made his way through the wine list – tasting a variety of the wines on offer before settling on his favourite one and ordering a glass (or two).

Overall we really enjoyed the meal and atmosphere at the Cape Milner restaurant, although we both felt that simpler food could make more of an impact.

Something we couldn’t fault was the personal service which was by far the most outstanding aspect of our meal.
