A few Saturdays back my nephew (5) invited his whole family for a family hike up on Silvermine mountain and it was such a lovely fun family day out…
We live right in the heart of one of the most beautiful parts of the world – in fact many of us have to drive through a nature reserve on our daily drives around town… but how many of us actually stop and enjoy the natural scenery and amazing outdoor activities right on our doorstep?
I am very guilty of admiring the scenery from afar and not ever really getting out to enjoy it!
Which is why this family hike was such a great way to get us all outside and enjoying nature.
We met at the Silvermine parking area at the top of Ou Kaapse Weg and headed off along the flat path to the small waterfall about 2km down the track. Along the way we were able to take in amazing views down the valley towards Noordhoek beach and beautiful fynbos flora, plus plenty of fresh air for our lungs and exercise for our legs!
The walk was a great introductory “hike” for kids. In fact the whole family managed the distance and terrain well and my niece (who hasn’t even turned 2 yet) were happy to walk the whole way… only at the very end did she start waning in energy, and eventually fell fast asleep in the back pack on her dad’s back!
We all loved the time together and made special memories together… I’ll definitely be getting our family out and about on the mountain a bit more often this summer!
