A few days after the end of a month I aim to share 5 of my favourite finds from the past 4 weeks so here are my choices for the month of March…
1. Me before You by JoJo Moyes
Since starting my blog as a hobby 3 years ago I’ve really neglected one of my other favourite hobbies – that of reading – and only when I get away from technology do I seem to find the time to sit down and soak up a book! On a recent camping trip I was able to do just that and it was blissful! On returning to the “real world” I found myself sneaking off to get in a few more pages, even heading to bed earlier so I could enjoy the simple pleasure of reading a great book in bed while it rains outside… I almost found myself getting annoyed at the interruptions that meant I couldn’t finish the chapter! The book that captured my heart so was called Me before You by JoJo Moyes, it is quite an easy read with characters that suck you in.
Louisa Clark is an ordinary girl living an exceedingly ordinary life—steady boyfriend, close family—who has barely been farther afield than their tiny village. She takes a badly needed job working for ex–Master of the Universe Will Traynor, who is wheelchair bound after an accident. Will has always lived a huge life—big deals, extreme sports, worldwide travel—and now he’s pretty sure he cannot live the way he is.
Will is acerbic, moody, bossy—but Lou refuses to treat him with kid gloves, and soon his happiness means more to her than she expected. When she learns that Will has shocking plans of his own, she sets out to show him that life is still worth living.
Me Before You brings to life two people who couldn’t have less in common—a heartbreakingly romantic novel that asks, What do you do when making the person you love happy also means breaking your own heart?
Although it might look like “chick lit”, it does in fact touch on some quite heavy topics and I would by lying if I said I didn’t shed a few tears. And to me a book that really moves you and stays with you long after you’ve put it down is definitely worth a read. Now all I need to do to keep my reading momentum going is get my hands on an equally “un-put-downable” book. What has been the most memorable book you have read recently? Suggestions welcome in the comments below!
2. Antique Pink Duo Lipstick and Gloss from the Vintage District makeup collection by Essence
In a previous 5 Favourite Finds post I mentioned the fab, affordable essence range of makeup and their new duo lipstick and gloss is a super practical must-have for your makeup purse! It is two different textures of the same colour – a creamy lipstick and a super shiny gloss. Each texture can be used on it’s own or together and the product is available in two shades from 28 March – my fave is the antique pink which is a coral pink while vintage peach is also available. (R39.95)
There are also some fab other products in this limited edition range such as the gel eyeliner in 2 colours, four fab retro-inspired nail polish colours including peach, rust red and a shimmer grey as well as a gel look top coat all priced at a very affordable R24.95 each
3. Skin Republic Masks
Skin Republic is a hypo-allergenic dermatological skin care range that has been scientifically formulated and laboratory tested by dermatologists. Skin Republic’s full range of 13 products focuses on skin care for the face, neck and décolletage, hands and feet, combining the latest technology in advanced skin care with the restorative properties found in nature. I was recently sent a few to try out for myself….
My favourite was the Neck & Décolletage Anti-Aging Treatment. This is not usually an area I pay much attention to if I’m honest but definitely one I need to look after a bit more as I am starting to notice a few lines creeping in! This is a 20 minute treatment where you use the wet-wipe type mask all over your neck & décolletage (chest) area. The mask contains Vitamin C & E, Aloe, Green Tea, Witch Hazel, & Marine Collagen.
The purpose of this anti-aging treatment is to improve tone & elasticity of the skin in this very delicate area. It is also said to visibly lift your skin, as well as reduce the appearance of freckles & age spots. I can’t confirm what anti-aging results I achieved after just one use but I loved how moisturized my décolletage area was after using this product – super soft & supple – a facial for my décolletage.
At the same time as applying the mask above I “multi-masked” and applied the Spots & Blemish Anti-spot and pore refining Face Mask. This mask has a similar wet wipe application and is aimed at cleansing and refining the skin. The mask contains Tea Tree, Salicylic Acid and Witch Hazel to help prevent future breakouts tighten pores and stabilize the barrier function of the skin by removing oil and reducing redness without over drying. I enjoyed the experience of this type of mask but did find out afterwards that it was probably a bit too much for my quite dry and sensitive skin as my face felt quite hot and red afterwards. As with all face or skin products it is always advisable for you to take care and possibly do a test patch first.
Next up was the Foot Rescue – the first Foot Bootie in South Africa specifically designed to combat Psoriasis, Eczema, Athlete’s Foot and the itching, burning and flaking associated with numerous skin ailments of the feet. Fortunately I don’t suffer with any of these ailments but I passed the mask onto someone who does and they gave me their feedback for the purposes of this review…
It is dermatologist tested and packed with natural ingredients, including 18 Plant Extracts to help relieve itching and burning caused by inflammation and irritation. Peppermint, Avocado and Tea Tree help soothe irritated, scaly and flaking skin. Argan Oil, Collagen and Vitamin E intensely moisturise.
Eucalyptus, Thyme and Mint Leaf help reduce the signs of redness, whilst promoting circulation and deodorizing. Other key ingredients are Avocado, Tea Tree and Marshmallow extract that help soothe and soften irritated, scaly and flaking skin.
Thanks to added Menthol, the Foot Booties have a cooling and tingling sensation on the skin helping to soothe burning and itching and feel very refreshing to the skin!
The dry outer layer of the Skin Republic Foot Booties allows the wearer to walk around and carry on with daily activities. While the inner layer contains the serum providing a continuous dose of ingredients and acting as a “second skin”. The Foot Booties also prevent bacteria and dirt being passed onto your skin which could be the case when applying creams. With cream masks, applying and removing can be quite a hassle, however the Skin Republic Foot Bootie is easily applied and removed with no messy clean up required. As the skin has a four week regeneration period, Skin Republic’s Foot Booties are most effective when used twice a week for the first month and then as required. An application is 20 minutes. (R42.99)
All Skin Republic products are available to purchase at Clicks, Edgars, Red Square & Dis-Chem.

5. Miss Manga mascara by L’oreal
This new mascara has recently been launched in South Africay by L’Oréal. It has amazing properties that give eyelashes serious volume and length – perfect “Manga” style!
This wonder-wand promises full lashes with one swipe of its bushy, flexible brush. It’s unique brush has a conical shape that really helps to get into the corners of each eye and especially to capture the lower lashes and give them more prominence. My own lashes are pretty non-existent without mascara as is evident in the pics above and I was very impressed with the affect a coat or two of this mascara made. Seriously Manga vibes!
Formulated with collagen spheres and polymers for ultimate volume and hold means that the mascara stays put and doesn’t smudge under your eyes – always one of my biggest mascara woes. For tutorials and lots of quirky Miss Manga inspired fun head over to Miss Manga World (R139.95)
