My 5 Favourite Finds for January

So I know I’ve let this series slip a bit (yes you won’t find Oct or Nov here) … bad blogger… so in the interests of getting things back on track I’m going to aim to publish this post as close to the end of Jan as I can! and then try to catch up on the 2 outstanding posts too. No promises but I’ll see how I go!

Right, let’s get cracking with My 5 Favourite Finds for January….

1. GOSH Kiss me! moisturizing lip balms

This product is a great way to give you luscious lips in one quick step… these crayon style lip balms give you great colour just like a lipstick, while moisturizing like a lipbalm, and giving shine like a gloss.

This special edition 3 in 1 product is perfect for Valentines Day and comes in 6 fab shades:
Innocent Kiss (natural/ nude)
First Kiss (light pink)
Flirty Kiss (orange)
Sweet Kiss (bright pink)

Perfume and paraben free they cost R99 each and are available from GOSH counters at Edgars & Red Square stores

2. Pure Beginnings Deodorant

After searching for what seems like years I think I’ve finally found an organic or eco-friendly deodorant that actually works!! (Well, for most of the day) This Eco Roll from Pure Beginnings comes in 3 natural fragrances but my favourite is Monsoon with Relaxing Ylang Ylang. The product has a lovely natural scent and although I’m not usually a fan of roll-ons I find this one pleasant to use. Not only does it mask my natural “scent” during the hot summer days but it’s free from parabens, petrochemicals, synthetic fragrances, animal products, aluminium, sulphates so I’m not spraying myself with chemicals every day which I’m really pleased about! It costs R65 and is available at Wellness Warehouse and other health shops.

3. Essence makeup range

Recently I was blown away by this beauty brand. I’d seen it on shelves and walked past it thinking it wasn’t really aimed at me as a 30+ mom but rather my teenage nieces… well, I’ve been missing out! They have a great range of products, all at VERY reasonable prices (almost every item is under R100 and some as little as under R20). The range of colours available in eyeshadows, lipsticks, blushes etc is huge – there is definitely something for everyone’s colour preference. They also have  wide range of eye makeup such as liquid and kohl eye liners, eye shadow pens and a variety of mascaras, plus loads of nail products and tools if you love nail art – you’re in luck!

A few of my current favourites from the products I’ve tried are the Blush Stick in Miss Peachy. This is a cute, chubby little stick that is super convenient to carry around in your bag. I’ve been using it daily as I’m loving coral and peach makeup right now. I dab it on my cheeks and then smush it in – perfect for a busy mom who sometimes has to do her makeup at the red robot! I’ve even used this on my lips when I’ve been stuck and it gives a gorgeous peachy pout.

Sticking with blush, another one of my faves has been the Silky Touch Blus in Life’s a Cherry. This is a pretty pink that has a bit of a sparkle. It has great pigmentation and I’ve been turning to this blush over some of my other faves almost daily as I know it’s going to give me a great glow! It’s a lovely blusher for everyday wear and every girl needs a rose pink in her collection!

Another fab fave from Essence has been the Sun Club All-in-One Bronzing Highlighter which can be used for cheeks, eyes or all over your body. This product is very pretty and gives a lovely sparkly shine when you need to feel a little sexier than usual. It also smells AMAZING – just like summer!

The BB Cream is also well worth a try… at R54.95 it’s definitely one of the better priced options on the market! Last but not least the trio of mini lipglosses is super cute and would make a fun gift for a girlfriend! I’m so glad I’ve finally been introduced to this Australian makeup brand and I’ll definitely be looking out for their stand at my local Clicks and Dischem stores on my next visit.

4. Chic Shapewear
So Christmas and New Year are never the best times for the diet are they?? And then to add to your woes they are usually the time of year when you are required to look your best…. work functions, New Years Eve parties, summer weddings and days on the beach all after week of indulging in Quality Streets and Lindt balls do not a happy woman make! So I hit the shops looking for some shapewear to pull me into “shape” – preferably hourglass! But alas, doing this the week prior to Christmas was always going to be a problem. And of course, as is often the case, I couldn’t find my size on any of the racks – Everyone had the same idea it seems!

Enter Chic Shapewear, a new website stocking premium quality shapewear brands such as Miraclebody, Lysee, Yummie Tummie and Miraclesuit. I knew I wanted a pair of nude shorty things that were going to suck in my “mummy tummy” without giving me an extra roll at the top or bottom so I was super pleased to discover they had a wide range from which I could choose. And even better they had a really handy sizing chart to help me select the correct size without trying them on first! (obvs a downside of buying online)

Chic Shapewear sells a range of lingerie, undergarments, swimwear and body-flattering clothing with built-in support, even jeans and leggings via their website and offers the convenience and privacy of shopping from your own home. (Although Gauteng-based clientele can make an appointment at the studio in Fourways, Johannesburg, for a private fitting before purchase if they prefer!) My parcel arrived beautifully packaged within 3 days and I am very happy with the new addition to my “special-occasions-requiring-me-to-look-skinny” underwear wardrobe.

5. Freshpak Iced Tea

I don’t know about you but I’m pretty sure I spend the vast majority of my life feeding my kids… the requests for food and drink are endless so I’m very chuffed to discovered how to make my own healthy and economical iced tea using my favourite rooibos brand – Freshpak! The recipe couldn’t be easier to make the basic brew and then if you’re feeling adventurous (and have the time) there are many ways to flavour it to your own taste!

Drop 6 Freshpak Rooibos teabags into a glass jug or bowl (one safe for hot water)
Fill with 1 litre boiling water, add sugar or honey as needed and allow to brew
Remove tea bags. Allow it to cool down completely
Add sliced fruit to taste
Chill with lots of ice cubes and serve

Easy peasy lemon squeezy right?? The good news is that you probably have all the ingredients on hand to make this drink right now, and, when your kids fall in love with it, you can keep it coming all summer long. Rooibos is a really great healthy alternative to fruit juice, just keep the added sugar to a minimum to gain all the benefits of no caffeine, preservative or colourants. It is also high in anti-oxidants, fat free and low in sodium. Get inspired with a few new takes on this basic ice tea recipe at

  1. ‘Thank you’ for the Essence recommendation, I had a look and spent R300!! 🙂 Gorgeous range, stunning colours, fantastic prices, just what a girl needs! So-thanks!

  2. When I first saw the Essence range in 2011 I was also very dubious as to the quality as the products are so reasonably priced. I was blown away! I made sure to pack a good couple of tubes of their BB cream and nail polishes for my recent move to South Korea.
    Thanks for sharing! 🙂 x

  3. Where do you find the Essence range? I too would never pick it up with that packaging. #brandingfail but I’m looking for a bronzer just like you mentioned!

    1. Hi Marysol – you can find this range at Dischem and Clicks stores! Hope you find what you are looking for!
