Concealers and perfectors seem to be having a moment in the spotlight and recently a few new ones have found their way across my desk. I thought I might share some info, plus my own thoughts, on these fab new multi-tasking products.
In the past concealers have been pretty one dimensional – confined to doing a quick cover up job after applying foundation, although a few have contained properties to dry out spots. A concealer has always been a product I rely on daily and I have always carried one around in my handbag to ensure my breakouts are kept under wraps! (Out darn spot!) However I’ve recently realized just how much more there is to this little product…
Fortunately until now I’ve not had to worry too much about dark under-eye circles or pigmentation, but age (not to mention motherhood) has a way of creeping up on all of us which means that my attention has been turned towards this new generation of concealers. Who doesn’t need a little bit of extra coverage to disguise those sleepless nights, hormonal breakouts and pigmented patches???
Here are the top 3 concealer products every woman needs to have in her makeup drawer….
L – R: Elizabeth Arden Flawless Finish Correcting and Highlighting Perfector; Revlon Age Defying Targeted Dark Spot Concealer Treatment; Garnier BB Cream Eye Roll-On.

Elizabeth Arden Flawless Finish Correcting and Highlighting Perfector (R245)
I recall about 10 years ago the biggest beauty buzz word was the YSL Touche Eclat and I remember spoiling myself by purchasing one on a flight to Scotland while living in the UK. It was the first of it’s kind to hit the market – and this highlighter pen soon became known as a wonder product and has gone on to become a beauty icon. The good news is that there are now so many options to choose from and the new Elizabeth Arden Flawless Finish Correcting and Highlighting Pen is one of them, and a pretty great one at that!
The Flawless Finish Correcting and Highlighting Perfector comes in a convenient and portable gold click pen with a soft tip brush tip for precise application. This perfector hydrates while also offering skin benefits too due to the brightening wu zhu plant extract and antioxidant vitamin E. The texture of this product is luxuriously lightweight and the product feels delicate enough to use around the eye area.
It is an instant pick-me-up that immediately erases signs of fatigue and restores skin to a radiant and rested glow. It also helps to mask imperfections especially dark circles and shadows under the eyes, but is equally good at disguising redness and blemishes.
The light-to-medium coverage is buildable and the formula is rich with hydrators, antioxidants and reflective pigments that help correct problematic areas and highlight the contours of the face which has become extremely popular these days thanks to Kim Kardashian!
Some of the benefits for this product are listed below…
• helps enhance brightness, radiance and luminosity of the skin.
• moisturizes skin.
• blurs imperfections.
• antioxidants protect the skin from free radical damage and environmental stressors that cause visible signs of aging.
This product can be used in two main ways which are detailed below!
To correct: Apply perfector to darker areas around the eye, starting at the inner corner near the bridge of the nose, blending product outward. You can also sweep it around the nostrils, edges of the mouth, or spot correct a blemish to perfectly camouflage discoloration and imperfections.
To highlight: Sweep the pen along the length of the nose, height of the cheekbones, inner corner of the eye and Cupid’s Bow of the lips. Blend product into skin for natural luminosity.”
It is available in six shades: 01 to 06 – from light to dark – at Elizabeth Arden counters at selected Edgars, Foschini, Truworths and Woolworths nationwide.
Revlon Age Defying Targeted Dark Spot Concealer Treatment (R138.00)
This innovative concealer allows you to pinpoint and treat dark spots. Featuring a formula with Vitamin C and liquorice, this concealer targets the appearance of hyperpigmentation to instantly reduce the appearance of dark spots for a more even, brighter looking skin.
The product has a unique applicator – a needle nose applicator that helps to apply the product directly onto dark spots and a sponge tip to blend the formula evenly and conceal instantly.
I found the cream texture of this product to be quite thick and and it had an almost dry, powdery feeling upon application, it gives great coverage and is highly pigmented for those looking to cover up dark spots, pigmentation or acne.
I wouldn’t recommend it for use under your eyes as the formula will settle in fine lines and look too caked one and for optimal results, you might like to use it with the Revlon Age Defying Wrinkle Remedy Line Filler™.
Shades available are Light, Light Medium, Medium and Medium Beige.
The Under Eye Brightener
Garnier 5-1 Eye BB cream (R69.95)
I’m a huge fan of Garnier’s BB Cream so when I discovered this new product from their BB range I was intriuged to try it out. This convenient little tube is the ideal product to cover dark under-eye circles and bags. The liquid texture is easy to apply using the cool metal massage ball in the tube, which also adds an instant soothing and cooling effect to this delicate area. Apply it in gentle, circular movements and the product quickly blends into the skin for a natural, illuminated result.
I love the light fluid consistency and easy applicator which is perfect to pop into your bag for brightening on the go! The formula is enriched with haloxyl, which acts on the cause of dark circles, and mineral pigments which will unify and smooth the appearance of the area under your eyes in just one step!
Some of the benefits for this product are listed below…
• hides dark circles
• reduces the appearance of bags and fine lines
• radiant, youthful glow
It is available in “Light” and “Medium” shades and sold exclusively at Clicks.
