Old Mac Daddy had a farm….
This past week was my 10th wedding anniversary, to celebrate I decided to treat myself and my husband to a night away at Old Mac Daddy in Elgin – our first sans kids in a while (so a very big treat!). We had visited The Pink Flamingo rooftop cinema located at the top of The Grand Daddy Hotel in Long Street a while back and seen all the funky Airstream trailer “rooms” on the roof (see pics here) and had thought it was a fun idea… When I heard that you could experience the same thing but out in the … Read More »

Weekend Wanderings – Green Point Park
Late last Saturday afternoon we were in the city centre after visiting the National Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition at the SA National Musueum (one of my “must visit” exhibitions held each year at this time) We weren’t quiet ready to head home yet so I suggested a visit to the new kids play area at Green Point Park. I had visited the section for 0 – 6 year olds but never the area for slightly older kids and wanted to see what was on offer. When we arrived I was overwhelmed by the number of families out enjoying … Read More »
Weekend Wanderings – Cedarberg Mountains, Rocks and Bushmen Paintings
A few years back, on my first visit to the Cedarberg, I insisted that we try to find some of the original Bushman paintings which I learnt about in my Art History class in High School. After a VERRRRY long and slow journey along a never-ending dirt road (with a tired toddler, impatient husband and a low-slung GTi mind you) we eventually found the elusive paintings in the Stadsaal caves. And it was so worth it! What a find, and what a feeling to know that thousands of years before us a fellow family of explorers had made this their … Read More »
Weekend Wanderings – Rondevlei
I recently went on my first school outing in about 15 years – to Rondevlei Nature Reserve. I hadn’t been there in almost as many years and was pleasantly surprised to discover that it is a wonderful, well-kept oasis which few people know exists within the city’s less well known southern suburbs. There are plenty of bird hides and observation towers from which to spend time enjoying nature and the beautiful surroundings. Rondevlei Nature Reserve Fisherman’s Walk Zeekoevlei 7941 Tel: +27(0)21 706 2404 Open Daily (except Christmas Day) from 07:30 – 17:00 and during December – February on Saturdays and … Read More »

Beautiful flower photography
Now flower photography can start to get a little boring after a while…. but not these ones. Loving these beautiful “exploding” flowers by photographer Qi Wei. He is inspired by Todd McLellan’s Disassembly series. Qi Wei says “The incredibly ordered world of flowers lends itself to this technique wonderfully. My layout is slightly different in that I try to show (as far as possible) the relative positions of the petals, stamens and pistils with each other so that the radial symmetry is preserved and the flower is recognizable, but only just so. What is intriguing is how much surface area … Read More »
Top 10 things I’m hoping to do this weekend
1. Sleep in a bit on Sat morning (like maybe 8!?) Kids whose with me? 2. Start my new book – One Day by David Nicholls – hoping to finish it BEFORE the movie comes out. 3. Attend 2 kids bday parties – yes this is what your social life revolves around once you have kids…. 4. Have a long, lazy lunch in a new eatery in Cape Town catching up with my besties from school who I haven’t seen in WEEKS due to new jobs and new loves (neither mine mind you!) 5. Watch Crazy Stupid Love starring Steve … Read More »
Beautiful Bon Iver music video: Holocene
Have you heard of Bon Iver? You might have heard some of his tracks on Grey’s Anatomy. If not – you need to know about him! They are one of my husband’s favourite bands. The cd’s are quite difficult to come by in South Africa but I was really pleased with myself when I managed to track down one for his past birthday. “For Emma, Forever Ago” is a great hit in our home. The music is hauntingly beautiful. A new video for his recent song, Holocene, has just been made by Nabil Elderkin and features the breathtaking beauty of … Read More »
