This week TIME magazine ran a cover picture that caused more than a small media frenzy! The image featured a 26 year-old mother breastfeeding her almost 4 year-old son (see above) Feedback was fast and furious with responses from almost every major newspaper and mommy blogger out there! I rounded up a few of the interesting items for you to read through and make up your own mind on this topic TIME magazines complete coverage …  Read More »

Decorex Cape Town is happening this weekend (26th – 29th April) at the CTICC are you planning to pop in? I am hoping to go a little bit later today… If you are planning to go please remember to support the Naledi Literacy Project by taking along any second hand children’s books you are happy to donate to this worthy cause. This year M-net Cares are supporting Literacy Project which encourages the importance of reading and literacy in young South Africans. All the books collected will be donated to a new library that is being renovated. While at Decorex Cape …  Read More »

Cape Town Science Centre

Since the arrival of my second child 2 years ago I have had to be more mindful of finding ways to spend one-on-one time with my eldest. As he is at school in the mornings I get plenty of alone time with his sister (as I did with him when he was still at home) but once he is home it is always three of us. A few weeks back I found myself missing time with my first born. When he was younger my husband was studying part time for a few years which meant it was often just him …  Read More »

I love to read and gain knowledge which means I am especially good at clicking on every link I like online. The aim of course is to read all the articles that sound interesting… but life happens and I don’t, which means I end up with 37 tabs open on my computer for days! Eventually I get around to reading all the very interesting articles and then I can’t help but want to share some of them with you. Here is a link list of some really helpful articles about parenting problems that we all face at one time or …  Read More »

The White House

Posted on 30th March, by Kathryn in Families, Inspiration, Interiors, Organizing. 5 Comments

I love this wonderful white space. Not usually a colour used in family homes, the Eklunds of The Netherlands have managed to use white throughout their home to great effect! The simple colour choice makes this home feel clean and calm. It definitely helps that they have such great organizing ideas which have been used throughout the home to store away all the brightly coloured clutter that tends to accompany children… There are some great ideas to be found in the pics below. Take a tour of a different kind of “White House” here: Paula: ‘People think I’m chicken for …  Read More »

Unhealthy food choices for kids

Posted on 27th March, by Kathryn in Families, Family Meal Times, Food, Inspiration, Kids. 3 Comments

No parent will intentionally buy unhealthy food for their kids but sometimes so called “healthy food” may find its way into the kitchen. The level of obesity in young children has been steadily rising over the years, with greater risk to their health. Even if there if we pay attention to the kinds of food our kids consume, there is no stopping the infiltration of unhealthy food into our increasingly affluent societies.   This has much to do with the advertising by food companies hoping to promote their brands. Their commercials may be just to promote their brands rather than …  Read More »

What I…. Melinda from Diaries of a White mother raising a Black baby

Posted on 8th February, by Kathryn in Interviews, What I ... Blogger Interviews. 4 Comments

Today I am excited to interview Melinda from Diaries of a white mother raising a black baby! This is her space where she writes about her ups and downs bringing up her adopted daughter, Emma. What I… Know Having figured that I knew it all after my ¼ life crisis, it took my daughter to make me realize I in fact know nothing. I don’t know why the sky is blue or why rainbows have the colours they do. I don’t know what a butterfly is called a butterfly and I don’t know why cheesy toast tastes better than cheesy …  Read More »

A jam jar of quotes

Posted on 2nd January, by Kathryn in Kids. No Comments

I recently found this wonderful idea online and thought I should share it with you as it really is something I am going to start this year. A quick and easy New Year resolution that is inspiring, thoughtful, fun, sentimental – what more could you want? The idea is to keep a track of all the cute and quirky things your kids say by writing them down as soon as they are said – any old piece of paper you can find will do (an old envelope, till receipt, page from your diary), just jot down the quote, who said …  Read More »

Weekend Wanderings – Rondevlei

I recently went on my first school outing in about 15 years – to Rondevlei Nature Reserve. I hadn’t been there in almost as many years and was pleasantly surprised to discover that it is a wonderful, well-kept oasis which few people know exists within the city’s less well known southern suburbs. There are plenty of bird hides and observation towers from which to spend time enjoying nature and the beautiful surroundings. Rondevlei Nature Reserve Fisherman’s Walk Zeekoevlei 7941 Tel: +27(0)21 706 2404 Open Daily (except Christmas Day) from 07:30 – 17:00 and during December – February on Saturdays and …  Read More »

Colourful Kid’s Spaces

Posted on 1st December, by Kathryn in Inspiration, Interiors, Kids. No Comments

Love these colourful kids spaces – the design is cheerful enough for children but also clean and simple. This home is situated in Sweden, but I’m sure you guessed that from the predominant use of white? It belongs to Lea Bawnager. She lives here with her husband and their son Elliot. Lea loves to visit flea markets and transforms her finds into useful, beautiful objects in her home. Here an old flower box serves as bookshelves in her son’s bedroom. Lovely! What do you think? Do you like this pared down Swedish style? I love how the colours of the …  Read More »
