Weekend Wanderings – St James Beach

As we enjoy the last few weeks of summer I have been trying to find ways to make the most of these beautiful days and the amazing, wind-free weather we are currently enjoying. One way has been to start most Saturday mornings down on St James beach located only 10 minutes drive from our house! This lovely little beach is perfect for kids as there is a tidal pool which gradually deepens and plenty of rock pools for exploring. We try to pack light and only take our bare essentials – towels, costumes, fishing net and buckets and spades plus …  Read More »

Weekend Wanderings – Palmiet

Last year we went camping at Palmiet. While we were there a wild fire was raging in the mountains near by. These are some of the photos taken at Palmiet lagoon, river mouth and beach as well as of the huge moon which rose behind the smoke clouds that evening! images: Kathryn Rossiter

Top 10 Ice Cream Shops in Cape Town

During this extreme heat wave we are currently experiencing in Cape Town I thought it would be a good idea to share some spots where you can cool down (which don’t involve getting wet!) Most Sunday afternoons when the kids are getting cranky and the parents cabin feverish we head off on a drive with no destination in mind – although that would be a lie because there is always a final destination – an ice cream shop!! Over the past few years we have frequented almost every ice cream shop in Cape Town and love discovering new ones too… …  Read More »

Top 10 places for a weekend walk in Cape Town

Sunday afternoons in my previous child-free lifetime were spent in various states of relaxation – reading, snoozing in the sun, browsing book shops – well not any more! These days – with two small children in the house – there is not much lying around and loafing to be done. Rather we are only too eager to get out and about and get rid of some of the extra energy (and noise!) One way which satisfies both adults and children is a brisk walk in the fresh air…. so most weekends we find ourselves heading out for a walk somewhere …  Read More »

Actually the whole magazine is exactly my style! To read the magazine online visit The Lettered Cottage Magazine And look out for the new edition coming out at the end of this month. Top 10 free things to do with kids in Cape Town

With a glut of public holidays (and a few school holidays thrown in for good measure) on the horizon in April I have been looking for good ideas of things to do with my kids. One of my first criteria is that they do not cost the earth because if you have 5 outings for 2 children and 1 adult which each cost R50 per person you are going to be paying out over R750 for one week of entertainment which is a bit ridiculous. And that is not even including drinks, snacks and parking! Anyway most kids aren’t even …  Read More »
