Sunday Lunch Special at The Cullinan Hotel
Do you remember the traditional Sunday Lunch Roast? It was a staple of my childhood when we would go around to my gran’s house to enjoy an array of roast meat and veg. Unfortunately these are busier times and a leisurely long lunch on a Sunday afternoon is not something that many people get to enjoy these day, which is why I jumped at the chance of reviewing the NEW Sunday Lunch Special at Southern Sun The Cullinan Hotel last week.
Their aim is to bring back the traditional Sunday lunch, one spent enjoyed delicious food while in the company of special friends and family. We went along as a family of 4 and spent a very enjoyable, relaxing time in The Peach Tree Restaurant at The Cullinan.
The Sunday lunch is served buffet-style in a beautiful dining room with white linen table clothes and sparkling silverware. Now this might strike panic into the hearts of parents but we were warmly welcomed and not once in our visit were we made to feel uncomfortable. What worked in our favour was that our kids are now almost 7 and 3 (so no toddlers running around wildly) and my kids haven’t spent too much time in hotels (yet) so the novelty of a hotel dining room was very exciting, but a bit daunting – so they didn’t feel confident enough to run riot.
One of the biggest highlights for the 2 of them was quite possibly what also led to the relaxed attitude of both of them – the soothing sounds of the grand piano being played by a pianist, Mike Perry. My kids were fascinated and loved standing and watching him play and having a chat about music while doing it! It was certainly one of the highlights for mom and dad too – the music AND the distraction!
Another highlight for all of us was the huge array of food available to choose from. From a wide array of soups, pâté, salads and mezze platters for starters to the traditional Sunday lunch favourites of roast leg of lamb with mint jelly, roast beef and Yorkshire pudding and lemon and herb spiced roast chicken for mains. Some of the other hot dishes on offer were bobotie, fish curry and our kids favourite – macaroni cheese. The fact that they could try every dish or go back for second helpings of their favourite was a huge tick for them (and for us!) I am one to try a bit of everything so started with 2 different salads, the tried 2 of the roast meats with various vegetable options. My husband started with the chicken curry and then went back to try the roast chicken which was definitely the winning dish of the day! Deliciously tender and very tasty!
The selection of decadent desserts meant it was hard to choose…. panacotta, crème brûlée, milk tart, cheesecake, chocolate mousse, lemon meringue, tiramisu martinis and seasonal fruit platters all beautifully displayed! I chose my favourite – tiramisu and then went back for a chocolate mousse. Don’t judge me! My husband went for his personal fave the crème brûlée – which I managed to sneak a taste of too and can highly recommend. Especially the impressive way in which it is served – select your custard, head over to the chef, sprinkle on the sugar and then he will blitz it with is blow torch right there! A hit with the kids!
Speaking of the kids – ours were delighted with the self-service cup-cake station – a host of sweets and treats for decorating mini cupcakes with piping bags full of coloured icing and their choice of silver balls, sprinkles, jelly babies, smarties, marshmallows etc to pop on top! The creativity was flowing…
We had a wonderfully relaxing time and our kids had a ball – even without a play area! We were all well taken care of and certainly didn’t leave feeling hungry!
The Cullinan Sunday buffet takes place weekly from 12:30-14:30. The price per head is R185 and children under 12 pay half price which is amazing value for money when you think about what you pay for a 3 course meal these days. I highly recommend heading here for a Sunday lunch treat or for a special occasion. It would make a great venue for a family lunch to celebrate a grandparent’s birthday without the stress, cost and clean-up of cooking at home!
