Spa Review: One and Only Spa, Cape Town

Every one deserves a little pamper every now and again… and you don’t get more spoilt than spending a few hours at the beautiful One & Only Spa, Cape Town

This was luckiest me a few weeks back!

I arrived at the amazing hotel near the V&A Waterfront on a beaut of a day. The seagulls were loving life in the sunshine – swooping and swirling above my head as I made my way through the hotel grounds and out to the spa.

The view on the short walk across to the “island” was enough to make you take a deep breath and relax immediately… Table Mountain, Devil’s Peak, endless blue sky, serene green canals. Paradise in the city!

Over the years of visiting spa’s I’ve learnt a trick or two, and here are a few…

My Top 5 Tips for Visiting a Spa

1.Arrive early

This is meant to be a relaxing day so leave enough time to get through the traffic without loosing your cool. You don’t want to be stressing about finding parking or arriving as a hot sweaty mess having missed the first 5 mins of your massage!

2. Wear uncomplicated clothes

Preferably ones you can remove easily, and put on again easily. No leggings after a massage – that is a nightmare, or closed shoes after a pedi. Be prepared and pack loose fitting, dark coloured clothes and a pair of slip slops for around the pool or the shower (and to save your pedi!)

3. Allow time

Don’t plan anything for a few hours after your treatment. Most spas have amazing complimentary extras that you can indulge in as a visitor to the spa – think jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, swimming pools, flotation tanks, zen rooms. You don’t want to be racing off to do the school run, you want to be able to take your time and enjoy everything that is on offer. Too often I haven’t planned for extra time and found myself racing out the door without even managing to enjoy one of the optional extras. Phone the spa ahead of your visit to find out if they have any extra’s you can enjoy during your visit and plan accordingly.

4. Take your swimming costume

Unless you’re among the very brave you won’t want to be strutting your stuff in the buff around the spa. Yes there are usually plenty of towels and a robe provided but a swimming costume is advised when you want to use one of the water-based extra’s. (although desperation has meant I’ve resorted to disposable panties in the past = not a pretty picture!)

5. Turn off your phone!

You’d be surprised how often my cell phone rings during a peaceful massage… too many times I’ve been woken from my massage stupor by my stupid phone. Aaarrgh. Even leaving it on vibrate isn’t good enough. TURN IT OFF. You deserve this little escape from the world. Just let people know you’re “in a meeting” and make sure there is a back up plan in place for your kids. Then you can actually lie back and really relax knowing you have no where to be or no one to answer to! Bliss.

My time at the One & Only Spa was a little slice of heaven amidst a busy week. This time I knew to pack the swimming costume, allow extra time, and switch off. And I made sure that I did!

I arrived 10 mins early and completed my forms in peace, then I was shown to the incredible changing rooms to pack my belongings into a locker and adorn my robe and slippers.

My treatment was to be the 60 mins ESPA Massage. I selected the scent that most resonated with me (Rose Geranium for relaxation!) and sank into the soft, heated bed!

My body was so very grateful! I seem to carry ALL my tension in my shoulders (every therapist comments on it!!!) so I reckon I need to make a monthly massage a permanent fixture on my list… The health benefits of massage are well documented!!

After my massage I headed to the Relaxation Room and lay down in the quiet dim room for almost 45 mins. It was blissful. Snacks and drinks are provided right next door and you can spend as long as you like in this space.

Not wanting to miss out on all the other options I then headed back to the dressing room and changed into my costume for a dip in the Vitality Pools followed by a Steam Room experience and a shower…

Finally, after 2 hours of really making the most of my time at the spa, it was time to head home and back to the realities of fetching kids from school… but in a far more chilled-out space than my kids have been used to from their mom! So we ALL benefitted 😉
