These days we all know that the first thing we should pack for a holiday in the sunshine is a high SPF sunscreen that protects our skin against UVA and UVB rays (if you don’t do this yet we need to chat!!)
But how many of us take the same care to protect our eyes – a part of our body that takes serious strain in the sun, and in all weather conditions to be honest!
Our eyes are exposed to much more sunlight than we think, which makes them susceptible to the sun’s harsh UVA and UVB rays too!
Unfortunately we can’t escape the sun – be it in South Africa or elsewhere in the world – ok maybe not England 🙂 The sun is an integral part of our lives and we spend much of our day-to-day working, driving, gardening, playing sport, watching sport, generally living the good life in the sunshine! And, as South Africans, I don’t think we would have it any other way!! BUT we still need to be aware of the importance of protecting our eyes from the effects of glare & ultra violet rays.
When planning for our week of sailing in Greece earlier this year I came across an amazing range of sunglasses that delivers not only top protection for your eyes but also amazing style and technology that really takes this “fashion” accessory to a whole new level!
Maui Jim is a brand that was born on the island of Maui in Hawaii – a place that knows about life in the sun!
Featuring patented PolarizedPlus2® lens technology, every colour is enhanced so that every detail is crisper and cleaner and without glare or harmful UV. Maui Jim sunglasses are endorsed with a Seal of Recommendation from The Skin Cancer Foundation as effective for offering protection for your eyes and the surrounding areas by blocking out 100% of harmful UV rays (and who doesn’t like the idea of less fine lines and wrinkles around the eye areas!?)
Did you know: Sunglasses that do not provide protection from UV rays can actually cause more long-term damage to your eyes because they shade the eye allowing the pupil to dilate and letting more light in!
Oh….the sailing life for me! Heading off across the Aegean Sea to explore the Cyclades Islands of Greece. A full day of sailing in the sun means I'm grateful for my awesome Maui Jim sunglasses! @officialmauijim #mauireflect #mauijim #sailing #greece #greekislands #sailinglife #atsea #aegeansea #girlsvsglobe #beautifulplaces #beautifuldestinations #setsail #thecyclades #bestplacestogo #becomingyou #sunglasses #reflections #newhorizons #wanderlust #travel #vacation #holiday #sailingholiday #lifestyleblogger #lblogger #tblogger #travelblogger #instatravel #instafun #wearetravelgirls
The Benefits of… Wearing Polarised Sunglasses
- UV Protection – The sun’s UV rays are serious! You definitely don’t want to expose yourself to photokeratitis (burnt eyeballs!), pterygium (eye growths), cataracts or macular degeneration!
- Skin Cancer – 5 – 10% of skin cancer occurs around the eyes so sunglasses aren’t just for sunny days, they’re for life! Always ensure you wear quality sunglasses that offer UV protection when outdoors.
- Eye Comfort – The sun’s brightness interferes with comfortable vision and the ability to see properly often resulting in squinting, watering eyes and headaches or migraines!
- Dark Adaption – Spending even a short time in intense sunlight can hamper the eyes’ ability to adapt to low levels of light such as nighttime or indoor light which can make driving at night hazardous. Eliminate this by wearing sunglasses in high light situations.
- Glare Protection – glare washes out colours, obscures details and fatigues your eyes so by eliminating glare you can enjoy the world at it’s brilliant best!
- Anti-ageing – by wearing sunglasses you protect the delicate skin around your eye (that’s far thinner than the other skin on your face) from becoming prematurely wrinkled or pigmented, thus delaying the signs of ageing! WIN
Maui Jim sunglasses block 100% of harmful UV rays and manage 95% of HEV (high-energy visible radiation that has been linked to age-related macular degeneration), while eliminating 99% of glare making them some of the safest, and most comfortable lenses to wear. I’ve certainly felt the difference as my eye is totally able to relax while wearing these sunglasses and that’s amazing for a someone with very light blue eyes!!
The good news is that even if you wear a prescription, you can still wear Maui Jim. 95% of the Maui Jim sunglass styles are available in prescription and can be customised to the colour of lens and style of frame of your choosing plus their prescription sunglasses offer the widest field of vision!
As a recent eye laser patient, my husband really appreciated his new pair of Maui Jim sunglasses. Post surgery it’s imperative to shield eyes from UV rays, glare and infrared light, as the eye is more vulnerable after laser surgery and he definitely felt that his eyes were much more comfortable when wearing his pair of Tail Slide sunglasses with Maui Rose lenses that really make the colours you see through the lens look incredible.
The pair I am wearing in this pic is called Koko Head and I love how super comfortable they feel on my face. I opted for basic black as I feel they are a suitably stylish choice that will always be in style and I love the grey mirrored lenses! I found these really great for sailing as I added a Maui Jim sunglasses strap to the back of the arms and felt that they were never at risk of falling overboard (unless attached to me!!).
At day spent at sea means we all have to take turns at the helm, even me!!! Loving learning about the intricacies of sailing on this trip. A good mix of adventure, exploring, relaxing and educational! #sailing #greece #greekislands #sailinglife #atsea #aegeansea #girlsvsglobe #beautifulplaces #beautifuldestinations #setsail #thecyclades #bestplacestogo #becomingyou #mauijim #sunglasses #newhorizons #wanderlust #travel #vacation #holiday #sailingholiday #lifestyleblogger #lblogger #tblogger #travelblogger #instatravel #instafun #wearetravelgirls #picoftheday
Another Maui Jim style I love is the Mavericks in gold. These “aviator” frames are the style I find myself reaching for daily since our return from sailing the high seas! They’re perfect to add a bit of style to my everyday. I opted for a different colour lens for this style and went for Bronze.
Finally had some time to look back at my photos of our time in Greece. What special memories. One of my favorite spots was the port of Hydra… a tiny harbour where we had to hop from boat to boat to get ashore, hundreds of narrow stone steps leading to beautiful sunset views of the town, hospitable locals inviting us to enjoy their view, lots of local cats, a Greek Orthodox priest about his business and only donkeys for transport! I can't wait to share more stories and pictures with you on my blog in the coming weeks!! So much to say. PS Loved my Maverick sunglasses from @officialmauijim Stylish and functional! #mauijim #mauifilter #sunglasses #greece #hydra #idhra #becomingyou
There are 4 lens colours to choose from when it comes to Maui Jim sunglasses:
- Neutral Grey for wearing in bright, direct sunlight
- Bronze for wearing in full sun or overcast conditions
- Maui Rose for wearing in full sun to overcast conditions
- Maui HT (Green) for wearing in variable light conditions
And the final selling point for me… If it’s broken, they’ll fix it! The sunglasses come with a 2 year warranty from the date of purchase against any defect in materials and workmanship plus they’ll replace nose pads and temples free for as long as the parts are available. They’ll also replace or repair any pair of Maui Jim sunglasses found to be defective (excl damage caused by improper or unreasonable use!) and they’ll do that in 3 – 5 working days. Impressive!
